All building codes are based upon protecting life safety. Everyone who works in construction helps ensure occupants are safe because we provide code compliant work. It’s easy to take life safety for granted, but thanks to everyone’s efforts, structure fire deaths are half of the number from 40 years ago.
Commissioning specifications often include life safety, but it is difficult to know what scope is included when Fire Alarm, Smoke Control or Fire Sprinklers are listed. These systems are verified by other contractors to the satisfaction of the Authority Having Jurisdiction or in the mechanical/electrical commissioning scope.
People are intimidated by code content and discover discrepancies between them and design documents or submittals.
EAB recognized an industry need and created the Commissioning Life Safety course in response. Please investigate the course content if you are a commissioning provider, building owner, engineer, or contractor. Everyone benefits from a fundamental understanding of life safety.
It’s never dull around here at the EAB Training Center, but with the Life Safety Systems Commissioning class progressing nicely, breaking ground on the brand new and improved EAB Training Center, and EAB Training joining BCxA as a training partner, it’s been even busier than normal.
BCxA has been a fantastic organization to get to know, and we are excited to add our hands-on technical training to their already robust training curriculum. We will be at their annual conference in Vancouver this year so if you’ve never checked us out, be sure to come by the booth and see what our training is all about! We look forward to working together with their membership to help build stronger Commissioning teams that impact the industry in a positive manner.
As Bill mentioned, the Life Safety Systems class is making great progress toward becoming part of our Commissioning rotation. We conducted our first pilot session in July, and our EAB participants provided valuable feedback that is helping us refine and enhance the course. Thanks to their input, we’re continuing to improve the class and are excited to make it available to a broader audience soon.
